Dr. Thomas J. Rutherford, M.D. is a nationally and internationally recognized oncologist and surgeon with more than 30 years of specialized expertise in gynecologic cancer care. Since 2017, he has served as Director of Oncology at South Florida University in Tampa, Florida, where he is also Professor and Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology and Associate Director for Quality, Education & Training at Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute (TGHCI).
Under his leadership, Dr. Rutherford has built a culture of compassionate, world-class cancer care, including establishment of surgical oncology centers of excellence, development of a state-of-the-art tumor biorepository, implementation of multidisciplinary tumor boards, and coordination of quarterly multidisciplinary Committee of Cancer (CoC) meetings that culminated in successful CoC Accreditation in 2022.
Previously, Dr. Rutherford held senior oncology leadership roles in Connecticut, including Director of Oncology for Connecticut Oncology and Director of Cancer Services for Western Connecticut Health Network, where he oversaw more than 100 physician subspecialists across surgical, medical, and radiation oncology.
From 1993 through 2014, he practiced at Yale University School of Medicine, serving as Professor of Oncology and Director of the Oncology Fellowship Program. He has authored more than 200 scientific articles and case reports and is a highly sought-after national and international speaker and lecturer.
Dr. Rutherford earned a B.S. from Roanoke College, an M.S. from John Carroll University, and a Ph.D. from the Medical College of Ohio. His career reflects a lifelong commitment to advancing clinical practice, education, and multidisciplinary care in gynecologic oncology.
